FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Stanley Cup, the ultimate symbol of ice hockey, has suffered some damage following the Florida Panthers’ celebrations for their second championship. The iconic trophy has a crack in its bowl and a dent in the base, something that is not unusual and will probably happen again. The Panthers secured their second consecutive championship at home on Tuesday night, defeating Edmonton in six games. Following tradition, the team celebrated with the Cup until the early hours of the morning, extending the euphoria in Fort Lauderdale until Wednesday afternoon.

A Hockey Hall of Fame spokesperson reported that those in charge of the Cup are taking the necessary measures and plan to repair it for Sunday’s celebration parade. Made of silver and a nickel alloy, the Cup, which weighs 37 pounds, is relatively malleable. The damage is nothing new for this 131-year-old silver chalice, which has been submerged in pools and in the Atlantic Ocean, as well as having been mistreated by players, coaches, and staff for more than a century. In this decade alone, the Tampa Bay Lightning dropped the Cup during their boat parade in 2021, and the Colorado Avalanche dented it on the ice the night they won the following year.
