Palmieri: The “Hockey Guy” Who Challenged Pain
In the world of ice hockey, there are plays that define the very essence of the sport. Last Friday, Kyle Palmieri, an NHL veteran, starred in one of those actions that deserve the recognition of all fans. The player suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) while chasing the puck in the offensive zone. The image was shocking: Palmieri collapsed on the ice, visibly affected by the pain. Despite the injury, and with the game moving to the neutral zone, the player got up, made his way with difficulty to the bench, but on the way, stole the puck from Emil Andrae, defenseman for the Philadelphia Flyers, and assisted in the subsequent goal. Palmieri couldn’t see the goal, as he was taken off the court and moved to the locker room. The injury will keep him away from the courts for six to eight months. In short: Palmieri tore his ACL, got up on his own, went to the bench, recovered the puck and made a pass that ended in a goal. A display of courage that sums up the idiosyncrasies of ice hockey. This kind of feats are not exclusive to hockey, but in this sport they seem to be more frequent and credible. Tenacity, the refusal to surrender in the face of adversity, are values that are celebrated in the world of hockey.
