WASHINGTON – Alex Ovechkin continues to make NHL history. The Washington Capitals forward scored his 903rd career goal, contributing to his team’s 2-1 victory over the Los Angeles Kings on Monday night.
This goal also allowed Ovechkin to surpass Gordie Howe, becoming the player with the most regular season goals at a single venue in NHL history, with his 442nd goal at Capital One Arena.
Matt Roy was also key in the victory for the Capitals, scoring a goal that helped break a two-game losing streak and gain ground in the standings.
On the Kings’ side, Anze Kopitar was the only one to score, marking his third goal of the season. The Kings, who had achieved four consecutive victories, suffered their second defeat as visitors in regulation time.
Washington opened the scoring early in the game, when Roy deflected a shot from Aliaksei Protas, beating goaltender Darcy Kuemper. This was Roy’s first goal in 25 games, dating back to the previous season.
In the second period, Ovechkin took advantage of an assist from Connor McMichael to score, adding goals in consecutive games and three in his last four games.
Kopitar brought Los Angeles closer on the scoreboard with his goal, assisted by Corey Perry, on a power play. Washington has conceded power play goals in three consecutive games and in five of the last six.
Despite the Kings’ efforts, Capitals goalie Charlie Lindgren stopped 30 of 31 shots, securing his second win of the season.
Darcy Kuemper, for his part, made 23 saves in the defeat.
