Capitals Clarify Alex Ovechkin’s Situation

The Washington Capitals issued a statement this Thursday to clarify the situation regarding Alex Ovechkin’s future in the NHL. This comes after an email was sent to season ticket holders that hinted that the upcoming season would be the star player’s last.

Through their social media, the team explained that the email was sent by mistake by a member of the corporate sales department.

Ovechkin, who signed his current contract in 2021, will turn 40 in September and his current contract ends at the conclusion of the 2025-26 season.

The player has expressed his intention to play next season, which would mark his twenty-first season in the league.

Ovechkin had a standout season, overcoming a leg injury to score 44 goals, the third-most in the league.

He led the team with five goals in 10 postseason games, but only scored one goal in the second round, where the team failed to advance to the Eastern Conference Finals for the fifteenth time in sixteen appearances during his career. The exception was during his successful 2018 Stanley Cup campaign, where Ovechkin was awarded the Conn Smythe Trophy as the Most Valuable Player of the playoffs.
