Sport is capable of provoking a wide range of emotions. In the world of ice hockey, the 2025-26 NHL season is barely in its second week, but there are already interesting conversation topics. Which teams are exceeding expectations? Which ones are disappointing? We analyze some of the most outstanding situations.

Positive Surprises

Boston Bruins

Record: 3-1-0 The Bruins started the season with an impressive 3-0-0, matching the start of the current Stanley Cup champions, the Florida Panthers. This performance is notable, considering that last season they finished with 76 points and failed to qualify for the playoffs. Boston seems to be enjoying their “underdog” role. Last season was atypical for the Bruins. Injuries to key players and the departure of some important players led to low expectations. However, this year, the situation seems to have freed the team. They have taken advantage of a favorable schedule, and are currently ranked fifth in terms of goals against, allowing only 2.25 per game. David Pastrnak is averaging more than a point per game, and Jeremy Swayman has a save percentage of .966. Despite the defeat against the Tampa Bay Lightning, the team has shown a good performance. If they want to keep the pace, they must avoid complacency. Their goal is to stay in the fight for the playoffs and give experience to the young players.

Seattle Kraken

Record: 2-0-1 Seattle has gone from being at the bottom of the Pacific Division to climbing the ranks. They have managed to beat the Vegas Golden Knights, without relying on a single superstar. The team has strengthened in defense, and is tied for sixth place in terms of goals against per game (2.33). Although they do not have elite players, the team’s focus on teamwork has yielded positive results. Joey Daccord has proven to be a solid goaltender, and Jared McCann and Vince Dunn lead the team in points. Although Seattle was not expected to be a standout team this season, their consistent approach could generate positive results in the long run. They will need to prove their worth against stronger competition, but for now, they are an “underdog” that could consider reinforcements before the trade deadline.

Nashville Predators

Record: 2-1-1 The Predators are looking to redeem themselves after a disappointing past season. With a new coach and a revamped team, they have shown good performance, with a sensational goalie and stars ready to shine. The team has demonstrated resilience and has distributed the offensive play among several players. Ryan O’Reilly is a dominant center, and Erik Haula and Jonathan Marchessault are also contributing. Juuse Saros, the goalie, has been fundamental, with a save percentage of .947. If Nashville’s defense remains solid and the offense continues to improve, the Predators could exceed expectations. They need their power play to improve, but they have shown character and potential. Special mention: Anaheim Ducks. This team is showing great enthusiasm under the direction of their new coach, Joel Quenneville, and with a renewed Chris Kreider, who joined the team in a trade. The Ducks have the fourth-best offense and the second-best power play in the league.

Surprising Disappointments

Buffalo Sabres

Record: 1-3-0 The Sabres were not considered title contenders, but their fans have already expressed their discontent. Injuries have affected the team, with several key players out of action. Despite having most of their main players, they have not performed well. The team needs to improve its offense and power play. Tage Thompson and Alex Tuch each have a goal, while Jason Zucker is the standout player. Zach Benson’s return in the last game was a boost for the team. However, they need to show that they can overcome adversity and improve their defensive game. It’s been 14 years since Buffalo made the playoffs, and they need to change that trend. If the Sabres manage to come together and overcome the criticism, they could turn their situation around.

Vancouver Canucks

Record: 1-2-0 The Canucks have had a disappointing start, with a performance below their capabilities. The main offensive line has failed to perform as expected. Elias Pettersson is not proving to be the center the team needs, and the power play has also not lived up to expectations. Despite having a great defenseman like Quinn Hughes and a quality goalie like Thatcher Demko, the offense needs to generate more energy to improve its performance. The team needs more teamwork and concentration. If they manage to improve their offense and reduce opportunities for their rivals, they could have a more promising future. Special mention: Vegas Golden Knights. The Golden Knights are having issues with the chemistry of their top line, despite the arrival of Mitch Marner. Coach Bruce Cassidy has had to separate his stars temporarily. The team needs Eichel and Marner to connect to improve their offense. Despite their start, Vegas has great potential that has not yet been exploited.
