Emotional Tribute at the NHL Draft
In an evening filled with emotions, Meredith Gaudreau, widow of John Gaudreau, announced the first-round selections of the Columbus Blue Jackets in the NHL draft last Friday. This event took place ten months after the tragic death of her husband and her brother-in-law, who lost their lives while riding bicycles, on the eve of her sister’s wedding. The atmosphere in the Peacock Theater filled with emotion as the fans chanted “Johnny! Johnny!” in honor of the player, affectionately known as “Johnny Hockey”. The ovation was deafening as Meredith took the floor.Gaudreau announced that the Blue Jackets were selecting Jackson Smith with the fourteenth pick. Smith, visibly emotional, described the experience as surreal.I want to thank each team and every fan for the support given to my family during the past season. It’s a true honor to be here, and from the bottom of my heart, I thank you.

Subsequently, Gaudreau returned to the stage to announce the selection of the Russian goaltender Pyotr Andreyanov, selected in the number 20 position. It was incredible. Seeing the support in the stands, in the crowd, for the Gaudreau family, it was an incredible moment, so being chosen right after that made it even more special for me.
