Mason Marchment: A New Chapter with the Seattle Kraken

Seattle hasn’t exactly been a regular in the Stanley Cup playoffs since the Kraken debuted. However, Mason Marchment already knows what postseason excitement is. Marchment, acquired from the Dallas Stars last week in exchange for a fourth-round pick in 2025 and a third-round pick in 2026, participated in several Stanley Cup playoffs games at Climate Pledge Arena in 2023, when the Kraken and the Stars faced each other. Although Dallas won the second-round series in seven games, Marchment experienced firsthand the fervor of the fans in the “Emerald City”. It was incredible. The fans stand out instantly. It was crazy in all three games. It was also a difficult stadium to play in. So it will be fun to be on the other side. The 30-year-old winger matched his career high with 22 goals last season. Marchment is entering the final year of a contract with a $4.5 million cap hit, which, in part, prompted the cap-strapped Stars to trade him. The Uxbridge, Ontario native played the first half of his six-season NHL career with the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Florida Panthers. Marchment didn’t feel slighted by the Dallas trade, despite being three seasons away from a four-year contract.

It’s a business and I understand that. I’ve been in this my whole life. So there have to be some changes, and it turned out to be me. I don’t take it as a negative thing. There are teams that want you, so that’s always a good thing. It’s part of the business. You take it as it comes, but I’m excited to start in Seattle and play.

Marchment could be a reliable top-six scorer for the Kraken. Under the direction of new coach Lane Lambert, the Kraken not only hope to be a playoff team in 2025-26, but also a more gritty team that better utilizes the players already on the roster after Dan Bylsma was fired after one year as coach. Marchment enjoys getting involved in the forecheck, defending the puck handlers on the backcheck and expects to do it all for Seattle.

That’s something I’m proud of and I like to do well. So, if I can help in that way, it will be great. But getting to the front of the net and getting in the goalie’s eyes, that’s huge. So things like that, little things like that are things that help win games and get to the playoffs.

Months into training camp, it’s still unclear which line Marchment will play on for the Kraken. However, he’s already starting to learn a lot about the Seattle roster through defenseman Brandon Montour, who played with Marchment in Florida. Marchment is also getting to know Seattle. The Pacific Northwest city will no longer be just an occasional stop on a trip, but a new home for Marchment, and one in which he is expected to contribute from the start.

I’m definitely excited to go there and meet everyone. But for me, it’s going to be a new opportunity and a good start, and that’s always exciting. So I hope for that, and hopefully we can improve as a team and make the playoffs.
