Evgeni Malkin Reflects on His NHL Future

Veteran Evgeni Malkin, an emblematic figure of the Pittsburgh Penguins, is at a crucial moment in his career. With 20 seasons in the NHL, the Russian player is not sure if this will be his last campaign, whether with the Penguins or in the league in general. The only thing he affirms is his desire to continue competing.

I’m still hungry. I’m happy to be here this year. It depends on how the season goes. If we play well, I play well, I feel confident and show my game, why not another year?

Malkin emphasizes the importance of the preseason for both the team and himself, highlighting the arrival of a new coach and some teammates. The excitement is palpable despite the Penguins’ recent challenges, who have been three consecutive years without qualifying for the postseason. In the 2024-25 season, Malkin recorded 16 goals and 50 points in 68 games, his lowest production in a nearly complete season. Despite this, the player wishes to continue his commitment to the Penguins, the team with which he has won three Stanley Cups, alongside Sidney Crosby and Kris Letang.

I hope to stay here like Sid and Tanger, and be Penguins forever, for sure. I hope we play well and everything goes perfect. Perfect me too. I want to stay here, for sure.

Malkin’s future in Pittsburgh could be defined in the coming months. General Manager Kyle Dubas plans to discuss a possible extension with the player around the Olympic break in February. Malkin is willing to wait and assess the situation.

I think we have time. It’s a long season and training camp has just begun. We’ll see what happens. It’s an important season for Kyle, for everyone here. We missed the playoffs the last three years; it’s not good. But again, now mentally, my focus is on improving every day. Staying here with the team and giving my best. And we’ll see.

Regarding the possibility of waiving his no-trade clause, Malkin has mixed feelings. Although he recognizes the benefits this has brought to other players, such as Brad Marchand, he is not sure how he would feel if he were traded and didn’t win the Cup. Malkin wants to see Pittsburgh get back on track this year. With a new coach and Crosby leading the team, Malkin’s success will be key for the Penguins to end their playoff drought. If he fails to regain his best form, this could be his last season with Pittsburgh or in the NHL. The player does not rule out the possibility of playing in Russia when his career in North America ends. However, his desire is to continue playing and he is grateful for the time and success he has had with the Penguins.

If it’s my last year here, I’ve played here for 20 years. That’s not bad either, you know? I’m happy to be a Penguin, I’m happy to win three Stanley Cups here. If I have the opportunity to play next year, I will.
