Kaapo Kakko Secures His Future with the Seattle Kraken

Forward Kaapo Kakko has formalized a three-year contract with the Seattle Kraken, with an average annual value of $4.525 million. The news was confirmed this Tuesday, solidifying the player’s presence on the team. The Kraken acquired Kakko, 24, on December 18, coming from the New York Rangers. The trade involved defenseman Will Borgen, a third-round pick in 2025, and a sixth-round pick in the same year. Kakko, originally from Finland, was the second overall pick in the 2019 NHL draft. Last season, Kakko achieved a career-high with 44 points, thanks to 14 goals and 30 assists in 79 games played between the Rangers and the Kraken. His 30 assists also marked a personal record.

Getting a contract with Kaapo was a priority this summer. We quickly learned that he would be a key piece for our team in the future. He has size, skill, and a tremendous ability to play, and he’s not afraid to go to the net. He fit in immediately with our group and we are delighted to have him under contract.

Jason Botterill, General Manager
In his 49 games with the Kraken, Kakko scored 10 goals and 20 assists. In addition, he tied his personal record for points in a game, with three assists in the 4-2 victory against the Los Angeles Kings on January 18. Kakko ranked second in points, third in assists and power-play goals, and sixth in goals for Seattle.
