Anze Kopitar, Kings Captain, Suffers Foot Injury
The captain of the Los Angeles Kings, Anze Kopitar, is at risk of missing games due to a significant foot injury.
The team reported on Friday that Kopitar will be out of action week to week. This news comes after the player was absent in Thursday’s 4-2 loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Kopitar suffered the impact of a puck on his foot during the shootout loss against the Minnesota Wild on Monday.
This season marks Kopitar’s twentieth and final year in the NHL, a career that has taken place entirely with the Kings. The Slovenian center announced his imminent retirement last month, at the start of training camp.
The two-time Stanley Cup champion has won the Selke Trophy twice, as the NHL’s most outstanding defensive forward. In addition, he is the second-highest scorer in Kings history and has been selected for the All-Star team five times.
The Kings have had a difficult start to the season, accumulating three consecutive losses and ending up with a 1-3-1 record. The new general manager, Ken Holland, made few changes to the roster that equaled the franchise records in points and wins last season.
Los Angeles will host the undefeated Carolina on Saturday night.
