Patrick Kane Seeks a Spot in the Winter Olympics with the United States
The Detroit Red Wings star, Patrick Kane, will attend the U.S. men’s team orientation camp this month, hoping to represent his country for the third time at the Winter Games in Italy next year. Kane, 36, participated in the 2010 Vancouver Olympics, where the United States won silver, and in the 2014 Sochi Olympics, where they finished fourth. In his 12 Olympic appearances, Kane has three goals and six assists. The veteran winger, preparing for his 19th NHL season, is one of 44 players who will participate in the orientation camp in Plymouth, Michigan, from August 26-27. This two-day event focuses primarily on administrative and team-building aspects, with no formal on-ice activity. Kane joins four other former Olympians at the camp, including Tampa Bay Lightning defenseman Ryan McDonagh (2014), and three members of the 2022 United States team that was eliminated in the quarterfinals by Slovakia: defensemen Brock Faber (Minnesota Wild) and Jake Sanderson (Ottawa Senators), as well as forward Matthew Knies (Toronto Maple Leafs). USA Hockey has already announced the first six members of the United States men’s hockey team for the 2026 Olympic Games: forwards Jack Eichel (Vegas Golden Knights), Auston Matthews (Toronto Maple Leafs), Brady Tkachuk (Ottawa Senators) and Matthew Tkachuk (Florida Panthers); and defensemen Quinn Hughes (Vancouver Canucks) and Charlie McAvoy (Boston Bruins). The final 25-player roster is expected to be announced in early January. All 23 players who were part of the United States team at the 4 Nations Face-Off will attend the camp, with the exception of Matthew Tkachuk, who reported that he was considering surgery that could keep him out of action for two or three months.Among the notable NHL players who did not receive an invitation to the USA Hockey camp are winger Alex DeBrincat, Kane’s teammate on the Red Wings; Washington Capitals defenseman John Carlson, who was part of the Sochi 2014 team; Canucks goaltender Thatcher Demko and winger Brock Boeser; Montreal Canadiens defenseman Lane Hutson, winner of the Calder Trophy as rookie of the year last season; and Calgary Flames goaltender Dustin Wolf, Calder finalist.
