In an exciting match, Tomas Poletin scored a crucial goal with a deflection at 1:14 remaining, securing Czechia’s victory over Canada with a score of 6-4. This historic triumph grants them a place in the final of the World Junior Hockey Championship, where they will face Sweden. The final promises to be a European duel, something that hasn’t been seen since 2016. In the other semifinal match, Anton Frondell emerged as a hero by scoring in the eighth round of penalties, giving Sweden a 4-3 victory over Finland. The final is scheduled for Monday night.

A Duel with History

The last all-European final was in 2016, where Finland defeated Russia in extra time. Both Czechia and Sweden are looking for their third title in this championship. Czechia triumphed in 2000 and 2001, while Sweden lifted the trophy in 1981 and 2012. Poletin scored his decisive goal shortly after Porter Martone tied the score for Canada, a team with 20 titles to its name.

Obviously we wanted this victory, because we heard them in the media. They were provoking… We wanted to keep their ego in check, and we succeeded. I think we were better.

Making your country look bad sucks.

Vojtech Cihar scored two goals for Czechia, with additional contributions from Maxmilian Curran, Adam Titlbach, and Adam Benak. Michal Orsulak made 20 saves, securing the goal. We were a little hungrier. The guys showed they are a team. They showed a lot of character and a lot of will. Tij Iginla, Zayne Parekh, and Cole Reschny scored for Canada, while Jack Ivankovic made 31 saves. That’s hockey. Be a professional about it. Canada had a tense moment when Michael Hage missed a penalty shot at 1:56 of the second period. Sweden, for its part, was looking for revenge after an overtime loss to Finland in last year’s semifinals. Frondell, after failing his first two attempts in the penalty shootout, managed to score the decisive goal.

I went blank. It was an incredible feeling… happy that the last one went in.

Sweden survived a power play situation in overtime, with Viggo Bjork penalized for rough play. Linus Eriksson, Ivar Stenberg, and Eddie Genborg scored for Sweden in regulation, while Love Harenstam made 33 saves. Atte Joki, Jasper Kuhta, and Joona Saarelainen scored for Finland. Finland and Canada will face each other in the third-place match.

Very tough, but we will do it for Canada. We need to regroup to be ready.
