Luke Hughes signs a millionaire contract with the Devils

The New Jersey Devils have reached an agreement with young defenseman Luke Hughes for a seven-year contract worth $63 million.

General Manager Tom Fitzgerald announced the deal on Wednesday. Hughes will count $9 million against the salary cap through the 2031-32 NHL season, $1 million more per year than his brother and No. 1 center, Jack.

Luke Hughes was one of the few remaining unsigned restricted free agents with just over a week to go before the start of the season. Over the weekend, Anaheim reached a deal with Mason McTavish, while Nashville’s Luke Evangelista has yet to finalize anything.

The Devils’ training camp lasted almost two weeks without Hughes, who missed all those sessions while his team and the team negotiated to keep him in New Jersey long-term. The 22-year-old player has 93 points in 155 regular season games so far.

Jack Hughes expects Luke to get the opportunity in his third full year in the league to run the top power play unit and play a lot of minutes.
