TORONTO – Jack Hughes shined with his third hat trick in the NHL, leading the New Jersey Devils to a 5-2 victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs on Tuesday night. Cody Glass and Brenden Dillon also contributed goals for the Devils, while Jake Allen made 23 saves. Jesper Bratt stood out with three assists for the Devils, who extend their winning streak to five games, after starting the season with a loss to the Carolina Hurricanes.

On the Toronto side, John Tavares and Matias Maccelli managed to score. Anthony Stolarz stopped 30 shots. William Nylander added two assists for the Maple Leafs, who have suffered two consecutive defeats and four in six games, after a victory at the start of the season.

Toronto took a 1-0 lead in the first period, but conceded three goals in the first five minutes of the second, to the disappointment of the fans at Scotiabank Arena. The Maple Leafs defenseman, Chris Tanev, left the game with an upper-body injury during a penalty in the second period, following a collision with the Devils center, Dawson Mercer. Toronto challenged New Jersey’s first goal for goaltender interference, but the initial decision stood. The Devils took advantage of the power play after the delay of game penalty, and Glass scored the 2-1 moments after Tanev went to the locker room.
