In an emotional tribute, the community gathered to honor the memory of John and Matthew Gaudreau, who passed away in a tragic accident last year. The event, which included a 5K run/walk and a family day, brought together thousands of people at Washington Lake Park in New Jersey.
A Legacy of Love and Solidarity
The initiative, which was attended by prominent hockey figures, such as Ottawa Senators captain Brady Tkachuk, sought to raise funds for an accessible playground at Archbishop Damiano School. This project, spearheaded by Jane Gaudreau, the young people’s mother, became a symbol of hope and remembrance.
The day was marked by moving moments, including the appearance of a morning rainbow, interpreted by Jane as a sign from her children. The virtual participation, which exceeded 1,300 registrants, demonstrated the extent of the Gaudreaus’ impact on the community.“I think this speaks to them as a family, how close they were and how much everyone loved being around them,” commented Brady Tkachuk.

The event not only remembered “Johnny Hockey” and his younger brother, but also raised funds for an accessible playground at Archbishop Damiano School, where Jane and her daughter Kristen work. This project was initiated by John and Matthew in honor of their grandmother, Marie, who dedicated 44 years to the school.
The initiative was supported by the hockey community, including Erik Gudbranson, Zach Aston-Reese, Tony DeAngelo, and Buddy Robinson, who showed their solidarity with the Gaudreau family. The event is planned to be held annually, with the possibility of extending it to Calgary and Columbus, cities where John Gaudreau played in the NHL.
“We thought this was something very good to honor the guys and we want to keep doing it,” said Jane.
