Blackhawks Captain Nick Foligno Out with Injury
Chicago Blackhawks captain Nick Foligno will be out of action for four weeks due to a hand injury sustained on Saturday during his team’s 3-2 victory against the Toronto Maple Leafs, according to coach Jeff Blashill.
Foligno, 38, was injured with 90 seconds left in the second period. The incident occurred while he was skating near the Blackhawks’ defensive zone, and a shot by Jake McCabe deflected off his hand.
Immediately, Foligno hunched over and grabbed his hand as he returned to the Blackhawks’ bench. He did not return for the third period, and finished the game with three shots on goal and a time on ice of 10:41.
The absence of Foligno, who has six points in 15 games, means the Blackhawks will not have their fourth-line center, who was part of a combination with Sam Lafferty and Landon Slaggert. This injury is the second to affect the Blackhawks’ forward group, as winger Jason Dickinson is currently on the injured list.
After finishing last season with the second-fewest points in the NHL, the Blackhawks (9-5-4) have become one of the biggest surprises in the first quarter of the regular season. With their victory against the Maple Leafs, they enter Sunday in third place in the Central Division and one point ahead of the Vegas Golden Knights and the Seattle Kraken in the race for the Western Conference wild card.
