Blackhawks Captain Nick Foligno Sidelined with Injury

Chicago Blackhawks captain Nick Foligno will be out of action for four weeks due to a hand injury sustained on Saturday during his team’s 3-2 victory against the Toronto Maple Leafs, according to coach Jeff Blashill. Foligno’s injury occurred with 90 seconds remaining in the second period. The 38-year-old player took a shot from Jake McCabe that deflected off his hand while skating near the Blackhawks’ defensive zone. Foligno immediately looked pained and put his hand to the height of the Blackhawks’ bench. He did not return for the third period, but finished the game with three shots on goal and a playing time of 10:41. The absence of Foligno, who has six points in 15 games, represents a hard blow for the Blackhawks. The player performed as the center of the fourth line, teaming up with Sam Lafferty and Landon Slaggert. This injury adds to that of Jason Dickinson, who is currently on the injured list.

After finishing last season with the second-fewest points in the NHL, the Blackhawks (9-5-4) have become one of the biggest surprises in the first quarter of the regular season. With their victory against the Maple Leafs, the team is positioned third in the Central Division and one point ahead of the Vegas Golden Knights and the Seattle Kraken in the race for the wild card of the Western Conference.
