Marc-Andre Fleury Retires in Pittsburgh, Closing a Golden Circle
Legendary goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury will end his brilliant ice hockey career where it all began: Pittsburgh. After announcing his official retirement last spring, after 21 seasons in the NHL, Fleury has signed a professional tryout contract with the Penguins. He is expected to participate in the team’s exhibition game against Columbus on September 27. Fleury, 40, was the first overall pick in the 2003 NHL draft by the Penguins. During his first 13 years of his career, he defended the goal for Pittsburgh, where he won three Stanley Cups alongside figures like Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, and Kris Letang. He left the Penguins when he was selected by Vegas in the expansion draft, shortly after Pittsburgh won their second consecutive championship in 2017.Known affectionately as “Flower”, Fleury was always well-liked by his teammates and the fans. He holds the NHL’s second-highest number of wins (575) and won the Vezina Trophy in 2021 playing for Vegas. However, his name is intimately linked to his long tenure in Pittsburgh. Fleury holds almost all the records for goaltenders in Penguins history, including games played (691), wins (375), and shutouts (44).Marc means a lot to our team, our fans, and the city of Pittsburgh, for the person he is and the example he represents,” stated Pittsburgh general manager Kyle Dubas.
