Ducks Send John Gibson to the Red Wings
The Anaheim Ducks have finalized a trade that ends speculation about the future of goaltender John Gibson, sending him to the Detroit Red Wings this Saturday. In the agreement, Detroit gives up goaltender Petr Mrazek, a fourth-round pick in 2026 and a second-round pick in 2027 to the Ducks, in exchange for Gibson, who played his first 12 NHL seasons in Anaheim. Gibson has two years remaining on the eight-year contract he signed in 2018, with a cap hit of $6.4 million.Gibson, 31, was considered by many to be the best goalkeeper available on the market. His possible transfer had been the subject of rumors for several seasons, due to his manageable impact on the salary cap and the Ducks’ lack of success in the standings. The emergence of 25-year-old goaltender Lukas Dostal in Anaheim over the last two seasons made a Gibson trade more feasible. In addition, Gibson’s no-trade clause, which only applied to 10 teams, opened up the market for the Pittsburgh native. After a standout rookie season in 2015-16, where he finished seventh in voting for the Calder Trophy and the Vezina Trophy, Gibson’s statistics remained solid, even as the Ducks moved away from playoff contention. In his career, Gibson has a record of 204-217-63 in 506 games, with a save percentage of .910 and a goals-against average of 2.89. Mrazek, 33, is under contract through next season with a cap hit of $4.25 million. Anaheim will be his sixth team in 14 NHL seasons. Mrazek went 12-21-2 in 38 games between Chicago and Detroit, with a save percentage of .891 and a 3.35 goals-against average. Both Mrazek and Dostal are Czech. We want to thank John for his time in our organization and for being an integral part of the Ducks for over a decade. It became clear that John wanted a new opportunity, and after many conversations with him, we felt that now was the right time to make this move. John and his family became an important part of the community and his dedication to Orange County will leave a lasting impact. We wish John and his family all the best in their next chapter.
