Sidney Crosby Out with Injury

The Pittsburgh Penguins captain, Sidney Crosby, will be out of the game for at least four weeks due to an injury, the team announced this Wednesday. Crosby’s situation remained in doubt since he suffered a lower-body injury while playing for the Canadian national team in the Olympics. The injury occurred on February 22 during Canada’s quarterfinal victory against the Czech Republic. Crosby, 38 years old, tried to prepare for a hit from Anaheim Ducks defenseman Radko Gudas, but the play ended with Crosby’s right leg bending strangely when Gudas fell on him. Crosby left the game and did not return. Crosby missed Canada’s semi-final victory against Finland, hoping he could be available for the gold medal game against the United States. Crosby told reporters after the game that he made the decision not to play.

It’s pretty clear, given the situation, whether you can play or not. I just didn’t feel like I could do it. I didn’t even think I’d be in that position after the game against the Czech Republic. I think the medical staff, everyone was incredible.

The inclusion of Crosby on the injured list, who leads the team in multiple offensive categories, coincides with the return of the NHL after the Olympic break. The Penguins will resume action this Thursday facing the New Jersey Devils. Crosby entered the Olympic break with 27 goals and 59 points. He was projected to finish with 86 points in an 82-game season. The closest player to him in points on the Penguins’ roster is center Evgeni Malkin. The absence of their starting center for at least four weeks could affect the Penguins’ quest for a playoff spot. The Penguins (29-15-12) were on Wednesday with the second-best record in the Metropolitan Division in an Eastern Conference where the competition is intense.
