Sidney Crosby nears another Mario Lemieux record
The Penguins captain, Sidney Crosby, is about to surpass another record of his mentor, Mario Lemieux. Crosby is only seven points away from Lemieux to become the player with the most points in the regular season with the Penguins. Crosby already holds the team record for combined regular season and postseason points. In the last game against the Flyers, Crosby scored his 58th and 59th goals of his career against this team. His outstanding performance in this rivalry helped the Penguins achieve a 5-1 victory. This season, Crosby has demonstrated his dominance over the Flyers, scoring 59 goals and adding 137 points in 92 games against Philadelphia, being the most points any opponent has achieved against the Flyers. With 1,716 career points, Crosby is close to surpassing Lemieux’s 1,723, who owned the team when Crosby led the Penguins to championships in 2009, 2016, and 2017.Crosby is in the fight for the NHL goal-scoring lead. Nathan MacKinnon of Colorado and Morgan Geekie of Boston both have 20 goals. Despite the game being promoted as a “Keystone Rivalry” encounter, the series has not been a major rivalry. Crosby has won three Stanley Cup titles, while the Flyers have only won two in the franchise’s history. Crosby has always been an exceptional player. He scored to give the Penguins a 1-0 lead, and added a wrist shot for a 2-1 lead in the second period. The Penguins have had a mixed performance this season. The team, which was initially not considered a playoff contender, has fallen from the top of the Metropolitan Division. Crosby is a reason for Penguins and NHL fans to keep watching the games, and his quest to surpass Lemieux adds excitement. Even his teammates, who see him train and play daily, are still amazed by Crosby.“I’m sure he knows me well enough to know that it’s not something I really want to talk about,” Crosby said. “I just go out and play. If it happens, it happens.”

“It shows what kind of exceptional player and person he is, by never being satisfied with anything,” said Bryan Rust, who had a goal and two assists in the win over the Flyers.
