The Washington Capitals suffered a defeat in the first game of their series against the Carolina Hurricanes, with a final score of 2-1 in overtime. Although the result was close, the perception of the Capitals team was of a performance below expectations.

It wasn’t good and that’s the conclusion. Our whole game wasn’t good.

Spencer Carbery, Capitals coach

Coach Carbery, whose team had eliminated the Montreal Canadiens in five games in the first round of the playoffs, emphasized the need for significant changes for the second encounter. A thorough analysis of the strategy, physical intensity, and puck battles is expected to improve performance.

Carolina, for its part, executed an effective game plan, combining constant pressure in the offensive zone and a high number of shots on goal. The Hurricanes recorded 94 shot attempts, with 33 of them reaching goalie Logan Thompson. In contrast, the Capitals only managed 34 attempts.

Alex Ovechkin, a key figure for the Capitals, only took one shot on goal, marking his lowest in the postseason so far.

We didn’t play our style of hockey tonight. We let them dictate the game. They’re a good team when you let them do that.

Dylan Strome, Washington forward

Aliaksei Protas scored the only goal for the Capitals, but took responsibility for a mistake that allowed the Hurricanes to tie the game. An errant pass in the Capitals’ defensive zone resulted in a turnover that led to Logan Stankoven’s goal. Jaccob Slavin scored the winning goal in overtime.

Start by being on the same page, and I don’t think we were today.

Carolina coach Rod Brind’Amour highlighted his team’s determination, which was rewarded despite being behind for much of the game.

The second game is scheduled for Thursday night, with the Capitals committed to improving their performance.

We seemed a little out of sync all night. It’s a game. I don’t think anyone expected the playoffs to be a straight line of success. There will be ups and downs. The next game is the most important.
