The Washington Capitals have unveiled their new third jersey, a design that pays homage to various eras in the franchise’s history.
The Capitals will wear these jerseys in 15 home games during the current season. The debut is scheduled for October 17 against the Minnesota Wild and they are expected to be worn for at least the next three seasons.
The red color, the base of the jersey, has been the team’s hallmark for decades. The design includes a nod to the 1970s and 1980s with a white yoke on the shoulders. The shoulder patch features the Capitol Dome logo from the 1990s. The main crest is the “Screaming Eagle” logo that the Capitals used from 1995 to 2007, including Alex Ovechkin’s early years in the NHL.
It reminds me of my first year. Good times. They look great. I hope the fans love it.
Alex Ovechkin
The “Screaming Eagle” logo has seen a resurgence in recent years. The Capitals first brought it back on their 2021 Reverse Retro jerseys, also being the first time the logo appeared on a red jersey. The “Screaming Eagle” was also the basis for their 2022 Reverse Retro jerseys, which were black, blue, and copper.
The Capitals’ new jerseys include details that honor their local fanbase. According to the team, the three stripes on the sleeves represent D.C., Maryland, and Virginia (D.M.V.). There is also a tag with the District of Columbia flag on the back hem.
Washington plans several activities to promote its new image. The statue of the bald eagle outside the Bird House at the Smithsonian National Zoo will wear the third jersey. Washington Nationals players will wear “Screaming Eagle” jerseys during pre-game warmups, while Capitals center Dylan Strome is scheduled to wear the jersey when throwing the first pitch before the Nationals game against the Atlanta Braves.
The t-shirts will be available to the public on October 17th.
