Mike Matheson Secures His Future with the Montreal Canadiens
The Montreal Canadiens have secured defenseman Mike Matheson with a five-year, $30 million contract extension, the team announced this Friday.
The agreement, which will come into effect at the beginning of next season, extends until the 2030-31 campaign.
Matheson, 31 years old, has a solid track record of 11 seasons in the NHL. He is currently in his fourth season with the Canadiens.
So far this season, Matheson has accumulated four goals and ten assists in 22 games. In addition, he leads the team and is positioned in the top 10 in the NHL in time on ice per game, averaging 24 minutes and 50 seconds.
The player was acquired by Montreal in July 2022, in a trade that involved Jeff Petry and Ryan Poehling, who moved to Pittsburgh.
With a height of 6 feet 2 inches and a weight of 196 pounds, Matheson achieved his best performance in the 2023-24 season, accumulating 62 points (11 goals and 51 assists). Since then, he has taken on a more defensive role with the Canadiens, regularly facing the opposing team’s most prominent offensive lines.
Matheson was selected in the first round of the 2012 draft by Florida, where he played his first five seasons in the NHL, before spending two seasons with Pittsburgh.
Throughout his career, Matheson has recorded 78 goals and 279 points in 649 games.
