BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Buffalo Sabres took their first lead of the season on Wednesday, thanks to a shot that initially didn’t go into the net.
In a power play in the first period, Jack Quinn shot directly from the area that went over the net, bouncing off the glass and entering the goal after hitting the back of the goalkeeper Leevi Merilainen.
Tim Stutzle tied the score for Ottawa in the same period, but the Sabres ultimately prevailed over the Senators with an 8-4 result, securing their first win of the season. Quinn added a second goal in the third period.
Before this victory, the Sabres had been outscored 10-2 in their first three games, losing 4-0 at home to the New York Rangers and 3-1 both in Boston and at home to Colorado.
This is the first time the team has avoided a season start with four consecutive losses, although in 2017 they recorded a 0-4-1 and in 2013 a 0-6-1.
