Don Sweeney Secures His Future with the Boston Bruins

The Boston Bruins are facing an offseason of changes, but there is something that remains constant. The team announced that General Manager Don Sweeney has received a two-year contract extension.

“Don has navigated a disappointing period for our club with conviction, purpose, and a clear vision towards the future of the Boston Bruins,” Bruins President Cam Neely said in a statement. “He made difficult decisions around the trade deadline with the confidence that they will pay off as we chart a path back to contention.”

These decisions included the transfer of key players.

  • Brad Marchand
  • Charlie Coyle
  • Brandon Carlo

Previously this season, Sweeney fired coach Jim Montgomery. Joe Sacco, who was interim coach, had a record of 25-30-7 and is under consideration for the permanent position.

Sweeney’s to-do list includes hiring a new coach and rebuilding a roster that finished last in the Atlantic Division. The inconsistent play of the forwards, the underperforming of goalies Jeremy Swayman and Joonas Korpisalo, and injuries marked the last season.

Last month, the team’s CEO, Charlie Jacobs, set a high standard for the upcoming season.

“We’ve talked long and hard about this: The team we have currently, [if] it’s healthy and with the additions we intend to make this summer, I anticipate that we will have a playoff team and play meaningful hockey this time of year in 2026,” he said.

Neely went further on Tuesday, saying that the goal is to win championships.

“I am very grateful to Charlie, the entire Jacobs family, and Cam for their continued trust and support,” Sweeney said in the statement. “It is an honor to be part of a franchise with such a rich history and a passionate fan base. I understand and fully embrace the responsibility that comes with this role. Our fans have high expectations for this team, and so do I. The collective goal is to build a team that will make Bruins fans proud and ultimately bring another Stanley Cup back to Boston.”

Sweeney has been the Bruins’ general manager for the past 10 years, reaching the playoffs on eight occasions. However, the team’s last Stanley Cup title was in the 2010-11 season.
