The renowned hockey player, Nicklas Backstrom, resumes his professional career in his home country, Sweden, joining the Brynas IF team. This decision comes after missing the entire past NHL season due to a persistent hip injury. The official announcement from the Swedish club confirmed the signing of Backstrom for next season. The 37-year-old center, whose contract with the Washington Capitals expired this summer, thus returns to the organization where he began his career.

I have always felt that I would like to represent Brynas again someday, if the opportunity arose. After undergoing rehabilitation and being away from the game for almost two seasons, I feel very motivated and full of energy to contribute to the club’s future successes.

Backstrom underwent hip replacement surgery in June 2022, hoping to fix a chronic problem. By September 2023, during training camp, the player assured he felt “much better.” His last official match took place on October 29, 2023, and on November 1, he announced his absence due to what the team described as an “ongoing injury situation.” Before this, Backstrom played in more than 1200 games with the Capitals, accumulating more than 1100 points and playing a crucial role in the 2018 Stanley Cup victory.
