Nicklas Backstrom Returns to Hockey in Sweden
The experienced ice hockey player, Nicklas Backstrom, resumes his professional career in his home country, Sweden. After missing last season in the NHL due to a persistent hip injury, Backstrom joins the Brynas IF team. The official announcement from the Swedish club confirmed Backstrom’s signing for next season. The center, 37 years old, finished his contract with the Washington Capitals this summer.Backstrom underwent hip replacement surgery in June 2022, hoping to solve a chronic problem. In September 2023, during training camp, he claimed to feel “much better.” His last official game was on October 29, 2023. On November 1, he announced his temporary absence due to what the team described as an “ongoing injury situation.” Before his retirement, Backstrom played more than 1,200 games with the Capitals, accumulating more than 1,100 points. He was key in the 2018 Stanley Cup victory. The Capitals issued a statement thanking Backstrom for his dedication and wishing him the best in the future, highlighting his daily commitment.“I have always felt that I would like to represent Brynas again someday, if the opportunity arose,” Backstrom stated upon rejoining the organization where he began his career. “After undergoing rehabilitation and being away from the game for almost two seasons, I feel very motivated and full of energy to contribute to the club’s future successes.”
