Carolina Panthers wide receiver Xavier Legette began his preseason press conference with a curious question about the difference between a thoroughbred and a standard horse. Legette, known for his passion for horses, responded with a smile, understanding the question as a reference to his possible participation in the Kentucky Derby.

The answer was clear: his standard horses are ideal for harness racing, not for competing in the Derby. Legette expressed his long-term goal of participating in the first stage of the Triple Crown, although he acknowledges that he will need to improve the bloodline of his horses to achieve it. Aware that adding talent increases the chances of success, Legette celebrates the arrival of Tetairoa McMillan, the team’s new wide receiver. Quarterback Bryce Young also expressed his enthusiasm for this addition, calling it “music to my ears.”

We are trying to win games. Any time you add a masterpiece like that to what we are trying to build, that’s great.

Legette doesn’t see McMillan’s arrival as a threat, but as an opportunity to strengthen the team. He believes that both receivers can be a problem for opponents, regardless of who is number one. Young agrees, highlighting the benefits for the entire offense.

Legette’s rookie season was filled with challenges, just like Young’s. However, Young has shown remarkable improvement, and the arrival of McMillan and confidence in the game system propel Young to a new level in 2025.

Coach Dave Canales highlights the connection between Legette and McMillan, and the joy that Legette conveys, who has worked on improving hand-catching, a strength of McMillan. Last season, Legette had seven dropped passes.

The addition of McMillan especially benefits Young, who now has two large receivers, Legette and McMillan, in addition to the speed of Jimmy Horn Jr. and the experience of Adam Thielen. Young describes McMillan as a “super smooth” player with exceptional hands and great reach, making the quarterback’s job easier. The selection of McMillan, instead of a defensive player, was strategic and not a negative reflection on Legette. Defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero anticipates that McMillan’s presence will put pressure on opponents and improve the team’s defensive performance. The goal of coach Canales is for this to become Young’s offense, allowing him to focus on his growth. He also seeks a culture of healthy competition among the players, something that Legette has demonstrated by accepting the arrival of McMillan. Young and the team share the common goal of winning and doing what it takes to achieve it.
