Xavien Howard Unexpectedly Retires from the NFL

Veteran cornerback Xavien Howard has decided to end his NFL career, announcing his retirement after only four games with the Indianapolis Colts. Howard, 32, signed with the Colts in August hoping to revitalize his career after a year away from professional football. However, after a criticized performance against the Los Angeles Rams, the player made the decision to retire. The announcement came after a game in which Howard struggled to cover Rams receiver Puka Nacua. In a social media post, Howard expressed that his “dream has changed” and that he is no longer willing to put football before his family.

“My purpose has been fulfilled in this sport, but my children are more important to me than football. I’ve had an incredible career, and although it’s ending in a unique way, I’m okay with that because for once I’m putting my family first and I’m proud and excited about that decision,” Howard wrote.

Colts coach Shane Steichen and defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo had been questioned about Howard’s future after the game. Despite the questions, Steichen had not indicated any plans to change the lineup. Howard’s problems on Sunday were evident, allowing seven receptions for 112 yards and a touchdown, according to Next-Gen Stats. The cornerback had a complicated performance in week 2 against the Denver Broncos. Despite this ending, Howard leaves a notable legacy in the NFL. He led the league in interceptions twice during his time with the Miami Dolphins, the team that selected him in the second round of the 2016 draft. In 2020, he was an All-Pro and a finalist for Defensive Player of the Year. Howard retires with 29 interceptions in his career, third among active players.
