Caleb Williams Impresses in Preseason Debut with the Bears

The Chicago Bears quarterback, Caleb Williams, demonstrated his potential by leading a dominant offense in his first preseason game. After a scoreless first possession for several teams in 2024, Williams guided the starting offense in an impressive drive that culminated in a touchdown, setting the tone for the season.

I think this sets the tone for us as a team. It establishes how we expect to play and perform. It was extremely important.

After receiver Tyler Scott made a mistake on the kickoff, Williams took control from the 8-yard line. In a play of almost four minutes, he connected with receiver Olamide Zaccheaus for a 36-yard touchdown. In his preseason debut, Williams completed 6 of 10 passes for 107 yards, a touchdown, and a passer rating of 103.6. His performance came after a standout training camp, including a joint practice with the Bills on Friday.

He’s really been focused. There are always steps forward and one back for a young player, and that’s been the story of this training camp.

Williams acknowledged the challenges, but emphasized his mindset of constant growth and leadership. Despite the offensive line issues in Friday’s practice, Williams had a solid performance against the Bills’ starting defense, without throwing any interceptions. In training, Williams shone in the two-minute drill, perfecting his connection with Odunze and Zaccheaus. These moments of momentum, along with the challenges overcome, have shaped their perspective on learning a new offense.

I think I’ve grown a lot. My mindset is to keep growing. My goal is to be able to handle everything I can and everything Ben says I should be able to handle.

Backup Tyson Bagent replaced Williams on the third drive and played until the end of the third quarter, completing 13 of 22 passes for 196 yards and a touchdown. Chicago outgained Buffalo by 348 total yards on Sunday night.
