NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Tennessee Titans quarterback Will Levis has decided to undergo surgery on his right shoulder, which will end his season. The team announced this on Monday.

Levis suffered the AC joint injury while trying to get a first down against the Miami Dolphins on September 30. The surgery is scheduled for July 29. The player will not be with the team when they report to St. Thomas Sports Park for training camp on Tuesday.

“We support his decision to focus on his long-term health,” the Titans said in a statement. “He approached the offseason with professionalism and demonstrated clear growth as a leader. We are confident in his complete recovery.”

Cameron Ward, the team’s first pick, will take the reins of the Titans’ first team at training camp, and will likely be backed up by Brandon Allen, a veteran free agent who spent three seasons with Titans coach Brian Callahan when they were both with the Cincinnati Bengals.

After suffering the injury last season, Levis returned after the bye week to start against the Indianapolis Colts, but was ineffective and missed the following three games. He finished the season with a 2-10 record as a starter, throwing for 2,091 yards, 13 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions.

Initially, Levis opted not to undergo surgery. However, he showed up to voluntary workouts ready to compete with Ward for the starting position and didn’t seem to have any shoulder issues during voluntary workouts and minicamp.

Levis trained during the offseason with quarterbacks’ personal coach Jordan Palmer. The shoulder injury seemed to be a thing of the past, and Levis declared feeling good after “relearning his throwing motion” while focusing on improving footwork with Palmer in California.

Callahan had Levis and Ward alternate reps with the first team during voluntary workouts. The rotation during minicamp saw Ward start and give way to Levis for some reps before returning to the group. Allen and Tim Boyle took over after Ward and Levis.
