FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – New England Patriots coach Mike Vrabel had an unusual moment during Wednesday’s practice with the Washington Commanders, getting involved in a scuffle that left him with a bloody cheek. The unexpected action of the coach caught the attention of the players, who reacted to the intensity shown. That’s what we’re trying to build and it starts with the head coach: intensity, giving it your all every day, not accepting any nonsense when we’re on the field. Vrabel was later seen with an ice pack on his right cheek. The situation unfolded after rookie running back TreVeyon Henderson made a block against the Commanders’ defense, resulting in a pile-up of players on the field.

Pass protection is physical. It’s a physical game. Things happen out there.

Maye added that Vrabel joked about the possibility of reviewing the recording of the incident. Despite the tension, the practice did not result in ejections and the situation was resolved quickly. The Patriots will host the Commanders in the first preseason game for both teams on Friday at 7:30 p.m. ET. Morgan Moses, veteran offensive tackle, who is in his first season under Vrabel’s direction, highlighted the coach’s connection with the players, emphasizing his experience as a linebacker in the NFL.

He loves what he does. Anytime you have a coach that you see out there using pads and getting hit by guys and doing drills, it makes you want to push yourself harder. He understands the process as a player and as a coach.
