J.J. McCarthy Enters Concussion Protocol

Minnesota Vikings quarterback J.J. McCarthy has been entered into concussion protocol after experiencing symptoms during the return flight on Sunday night, according to coach Kevin O’Connell on Monday.

The news comes after the Vikings suffered a 23-6 defeat to the Green Bay Packers on Sunday, leaving their record at 4-7.

In the first half of the game against the Packers, the team relied on running backs Jordan Mason and Aaron Jones for a ball-control-based attack. However, when McCarthy was required, the offense couldn’t overcome the Packers’ pressure.

McCarthy completed 12 of 19 passes for 87 yards and suffered interceptions in the last two series of the game.

With a QBR of 24.9 after six starts, McCarthy is recording one of the worst career starts for a quarterback in the last decade of the NFL.

The game plan on Sunday against the Packers was one of the least aggressive under O’Connell’s direction, with the Vikings using designed runs on 58.6% of their plays in the first half, the highest rate since O’Connell took over in 2022 and only the third time they have exceeded 50%.

While McCarthy remains in the protocol, Max Brosmer will work with the first team. O’Connell has not yet confirmed whether McCarthy will be absent for Sunday’s game against the Seattle Seahawks.
