Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill has expressed a significant shift in his mindset heading into his fourth season with the team. Following a 2024 that generated both sports headlines and off-field controversies, Hill appears renewed and focused on the future.
Hill spoke with local media from the team’s training facility on Wednesday, after participating in a limited capacity in the Dolphins’ OTA practices. He underwent surgery on his right wrist shortly after the 2024 season concluded and is not expected to catch passes again until training camp this summer. This was the first time Hill spoke to local media since he suggested a trade request following Miami’s loss to the New York Jets in January. During that game, Hill also sat out the second half, something coach Mike McDaniel did not approve of.
After the game, Hill expressed his frustration at missing the playoffs for the first time in his career and hinted at the possibility of playing elsewhere next season. He eventually retracted his comments and publicly apologized.
Hill has also made headlines for multiple off-field incidents during his time with the Dolphins, including a domestic altercation in April involving the police and his wife, who filed for divorce days later. The player revealed that he has attended church and therapy during the last month, which has helped him reflect on his decisions and why it has been so difficult for him to stay away from headlines that are not related to football. It was tough, man. Obviously, emotions were running high at the time, but at the end of the day, I’m just looking to move forward, hoping I can prove to myself and my teammates that I’m still one of them, man, that’s chasing 2,000 receiving yards, still one of those chasing playoff dreams and all that cool stuff.

Hill has received praise from his coaches and teammates for his level of involvement this offseason, including wide receivers coach Robert Prince, who invited the group to dinner at the start of the Dolphins’ offseason program. The five-time All-Pro expressed feeling completely immersed in the culture the Dolphins seek to establish. It’s tough. The only thing I’m going to say is, man, money is a crazy thing for a lot of people.

Hill was named captain in his first three years with Miami, but he doesn’t think he deserves the position again in 2025, at least not yet.I’m doing more. So being more involved in that and then just understanding what the coach is trying to do. I feel like when I first got here, I wouldn’t say I wasn’t fully involved, but having, having a better understanding of what [McDaniel] is trying to push throughout the whole locker room, I feel like I understand it better now. I understand [Tua Tagovailoa] better. I understand Bev [quarterbacks coach and pass game coordinator, Darrell Bevell]; our new receivers coach: me and him connected immediately when he got here. Everybody’s on the same page, man.

It’s still a title he aims to achieve, but Hill understands he needs to earn the captaincy after his actions at the end of the 2024 season.
I have to show what I am capable of in these OTAs, in training camp. I have to show what I am capable of, I have to show myself differently. The mentality has to be different. I don’t feel like I deserve it, and if I didn’t get it, I wouldn’t dwell on that. I wouldn’t worry, you know? I put myself in that position.

Hill recorded 959 receiving yards last season, averaging 56.4 yards per game, his lowest totals since 2019 and 2016, respectively. He played the entire season with a wrist injury he suffered in August, and doctors indicated that he required surgery at the end of the season. Hill postponed the surgery until after the season, but said on Wednesday that he is grateful for the procedure, after initially feeling nervous about it.
He also looked noticeably thinner and said he now weighs 183 pounds, after playing at 197 pounds when he first arrived in Miami.I would say it’s something I wanted to do. In recent years, I can obviously run with anyone, run alongside anyone, but I think having that endurance, having that ability not to get tired on third downs is very important. So I wanted to slim down and lose body fat. I committed to eating well, training hard every day, and drinking more water.
