Colorado two-way star Travis Hunter has made it clear that he is unwilling to give up playing both positions, according to statements to CBS Sports.

Hunter, who is shaping up to be one of the top picks in the upcoming NFL draft, emphasized that if a team were to require him to focus on a single position, either wide receiver or cornerback, the situation would be unsustainable for him.

“I just wouldn’t play football anymore. I’ve been doing this my whole life and I love being on the field. I feel like I can dominate on every side of the ball, so I really enjoy doing it,” Hunter told CBS Sports.

Hunter’s versatility has been widely recognized, earning him numerous national awards. In his junior season, he won the Heisman Trophy, the Walter Camp Award, the Biletnikoff Award as the best receiver, the Bednarik Award, and the Lott IMPACT Trophy as defensive player of the year, in addition to his second consecutive Paul Hornung Award as the most versatile player.

In 2024, Hunter accumulated 713 offensive plays and 748 defensive plays with the Buffaloes. According to ESPN Research data, he was the first player since at least 1976 to record at least 500 receiving yards (1,152 last season) and four interceptions in a single season.

Hunter led the FBS in both 2023 and 2024 in plays, totaling 2,625 despite missing nearly five games due to injury.

The 21-year-old player expressed his confidence in his ability to perform at the highest level.

“I just have a lot of faith in myself. I have a competitive spirit and I can do whatever I put my mind to, and I feel like I can accomplish it,” Hunter told CBS Sports.

Andrew Berry, general manager of the Cleveland Browns, a team that has the second pick in the draft that begins on April 24, mentioned at the scouting combine in February that Hunter could play both positions, prioritizing wide receiver.

“As for Travis Hunter, cornerback or receiver? The answer is yes. He can play both. I think that’s what makes him special. First, primarily receiver, but I think what makes him a unicorn is the fact that he can do it at a high level,” Berry said.

Hunter responded to CBS Sports about this possibility.

“It’s not up to me. When they say my name, if they say my name, then we’ll figure it out, but it’s not up to me. That’s what they think of me right now,” Hunter concluded.
