Tennessee Titans Fire Brian Callahan

The Tennessee Titans have made the decision to fire their head coach, Brian Callahan, after only six games in his second season leading the team. Callahan leaves the team with a 4-19 record, including a 1-5 in the current season. The Titans’ starting quarterback, Cam Ward, was the first pick in the 2025 draft.

We felt this was the right time to make a change. We were looking for growth in this football team, and that’s what it’s all about right now. We are not seeing enough growth.

Chad Brinker, Titans’ president of football operations
Mike McCoy, senior offensive assistant, will take over as interim coach. McCoy previously was head coach of the San Diego Chargers from 2013 to 2016, with a record of 27-37, reaching the playoffs in his first season. The organization will focus on giving McCoy the opportunity to prove he can be the next head coach, not just the interim.

What Mike brings right now is experience, leadership. He has been a head coach. He is a former quarterback who has had years in the NFL as a player and has been around NFL quarterbacks like Philip Rivers, Peyton Manning, and was with Trevor Lawrence last year.

Mike Borgonzi, Titans general manager
Bill Callahan, Titans offensive line coach and father of Brian, will also not be staying with the team. No information has been announced about other possible staff changes. In Callahan’s first season, the Titans had a 3-14 record, which allowed them to obtain the first draft pick and select Ward. With Callahan’s dismissal, the head coaches of four of the last quarterbacks selected in the first position of the draft have been fired during their rookie seasons. The Titans’ offense has scored only 83 points, the fewest in the first six games since 1985. Frustration reached its peak in the 41-20 defeat against the Indianapolis Colts in Week 3. Fans booed the team and chanted “Fire Callahan!” during the game. Callahan ceded play-calling responsibilities to quarterbacks coach Bo Hardegree last month. The situation worsened after the 26-0 loss to the Houston Texans in Week 4. The Titans failed to reach the red zone, and Ward expressed his frustration. Callahan earned his first win of the season last week, with a 22-21 victory over the Cardinals, but the 20-10 loss to the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday sealed his fate. It was the Titans’ fourth loss by at least 10 points this season, the most for any team. The Titans hired Callahan in 2023, following the dismissal of former coach Mike Vrabel, who led the team to two AFC South titles. Vrabel returns to Nissan Stadium this Sunday for a matchup between the Titans and the New England Patriots.
