The Tennessee Titans have made the decision to fire coach Brian Callahan, according to an official announcement this Monday. The move comes after only six games in his second season at the helm of the team. Callahan leaves the team with a 4-19 record as the Titans’ coach, including a 1-5 in the current season. The team’s starting quarterback is Cam Ward, the first overall pick in the 2025 draft. Mike McCoy, senior offensive assistant, will take over as interim coach, the team reported. McCoy previously was head coach of the San Diego Chargers from 2013 to 2016, where he compiled a 27-37 record and led the team to the playoffs in his first season.

What Mike brings at this moment is experience, leadership. He has been a head coach. He is a former quarterback who has had years in the NFL as a player and has been around NFL quarterbacks like Philip Rivers, Peyton Manning, and was with Trevor Lawrence last year.

In the previous season, the Titans recorded a 3-14 record, which allowed them to obtain the first draft pick and choose Ward. This coaching change adds to a worrying trend: four of the last quarterbacks drafted with the first overall pick and six of the last eight have seen their coaches fired during their rookie seasons. The Titans’ offensive performance has been particularly low this season, with only 83 points scored in six games, the lowest figure since 1985. A team source confirmed that Bill Callahan, offensive line coach and father of Brian, will also leave the team.

We felt this was the right time to make a change. We were looking for growth in this football team, and that’s what this is all about now. We are not seeing enough growth in this football team.

Chad Brinker, Titans President of Football Operations
The fans’ frustration became evident in the Week 3 loss to the Indianapolis Colts, with boos and chants of “Fire Callahan.” Despite Callahan relinquishing quarterback coaching duties to Bo Hardegree, the situation worsened after a Week 4 loss to the Houston Texans. Callahan’s only victory this season was against the Arizona Cardinals, but the loss to the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday sealed his fate. It was the Titans’ fourth loss by at least 10 points this season, the most of any team. Callahan was hired in 2023, after Amy Adams Strunk, majority owner, fired the previous coach Mike Vrabel, who had led the team to two AFC South division titles. Vrabel returns to Nissan Stadium this Sunday for a matchup between the Titans and the New England Patriots.
