In a strategic move aimed at revitalizing the team’s performance, Titans coach Brian Callahan has decided to hand over offensive play-calling responsibilities to quarterbacks coach Bo Hardegree. The news was confirmed on Tuesday, marking a significant change in the team’s strategy. Nick Holz will continue to fulfill his role as offensive coordinator, maintaining his responsibilities in the development of the game plan.

I was hired to be the head coach, and part of that process involved being involved in the offense, but my job is to be the head coach of the football team, and I think this change allows me to do that job a little better, pay more attention to some things that may require my attention and be more present.

Callahan, who has a 3-17 record as the Titans’ head coach and has been outscored 94-51 while going 0-3 this season, has decided to take this step to focus more on his overall duties as head coach. “We’re 0-3. We’re trying to get better,” Callahan added. Hardegree’s selection to call the plays was based on his previous experience. Hardegree served as the interim offensive coordinator for nine games with the Las Vegas Raiders in 2023, following the firing of head coach Josh McDaniels. During that period, the Raiders achieved a 5-4 record.
Hardegree expressed his enthusiasm for the opportunity, mentioning his previous experience and the influence of coaches like David Cutcliffe and Adam Gase on his play-calling philosophy. The Titans’ offense has struggled this season, averaging 17 points per game (28th in the NFL) and scoring only three touchdowns in three games. The situation has generated frustration among fans, who have expressed their discontent with chants and boos. Protect the ball and score points. That’s all. Callahan emphasized that, despite the change in play-calling, the offensive planning process will remain collaborative. The offensive staff and game planning system will remain in place, with Hardegree, Holz, and Callahan working together in game planning meetings. Holz will handle the base plays. Mike McCoy and Tyke Tolbert will continue to be in charge of the red zone game plan, while Randy Jordan will continue to manage the screen game. The Titans face three consecutive away games, starting this week against the Houston Texans, followed by trips to the West Coast to face the Arizona Cardinals and the Las Vegas Raiders.
