Texans Secure Davis Mills with Contract Extension

The Houston Texans have secured the continuity of their backup quarterback, Davis Mills, with a one-year contract extension, according to sources close to the matter. The agreement, which extends Mills’ stay in Houston through the 2026 season, is worth $7 million and is fully guaranteed. The player’s previous contract was for $5 million. Mills’ last start was against the Indianapolis Colts in January 2023, where he threw for 298 yards and three touchdowns, in addition to completing the game-winning two-point conversion pass to tight end Jordan Akins. That victory propelled Houston from the No. 1 pick in the 2023 NFL draft to No. 2, where they selected C.J. Stroud. Mills and Stroud competed for the quarterback position at the start of the 2023 training camp, but Stroud won the job. Since then, Stroud has led Houston to consecutive AFC South titles and divisional round appearances in the playoffs. Mills, selected in the third round of the 2021 draft from Stanford, started in 26 games for Houston from 2021 to 2022. He had a record of 5-20-1 and threw for 5,802 yards with 33 touchdowns and 25 interceptions. Since Stroud’s arrival in Houston, Mills has thrown 75 passes for 385 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions. In the current training camp, Texans coach DeMeco Ryans expressed his admiration for Mills’ performance and his optimism about his ability to play well in specific situations if Stroud were absent.

If something happens to your starter, you don’t have players behind him who can come out and perform and keep the team moving, then, most of the time, your season just ends. I feel really good about Davis. Davis has had the best camp I’ve seen since he’s been here.
