Terry McLaurin Misses Commanders Practice Amidst Contract Negotiations
Washington Commanders wide receiver Terry McLaurin did not report to training camp on Tuesday, according to sources close to the team. This absence comes amid negotiations for a contract extension, which has generated uncertainty about his future with the team. McLaurin, who expressed his frustration with the progress of contract talks last week, was not present for Tuesday’s conditioning test, marking the unofficial start of training camp. The absence of McLaurin could result in a fine of $50,000 for each day missed. However, Commanders general manager Adam Peters has indicated that the team is committed to reaching an agreement.“Without progressive discussions, it’s difficult to see how I get on the field,” McLaurin stated last week, adding that they hadn’t had conversations in over a month.

McLaurin has one year remaining on a three-year, $68 million contract he signed in 2022. Although he hasn’t publicly specified the type of contract he’s seeking, he has emphasized his desire to feel valued, considering current market trends. Several prominent wide receivers have recently signed long-term deals, including Tee Higgins of the Cincinnati Bengals, DK Metcalf of the Pittsburgh Steelers, and Garrett Wilson of the New York Jets. Since arriving in the NFL in 2019, McLaurin has been Washington’s star receiver, surpassing 1,000 yards in each of the last five seasons and recording 13 touchdowns last season, tied for second in the NFL. In addition to his performance on the field, McLaurin is considered a team leader and a fan favorite, being chosen as captain by his teammates during the last postseason.“We’ve had good conversations recently and will continue. We will do everything possible to reach an agreement,” Peters affirmed.

With McLaurin approaching 30 in September, an age at which some teams might consider a receiver to be starting to decline, the player has pointed out that he has only been in the NFL for seven seasons and didn’t have much participation in his first two years at Ohio State. Peters has emphasized the importance of reaching an agreement that is fair to both parties, recognizing McLaurin’s value to the franchise while also focusing on the team’s future.“Undoubtedly, everyone in this building values Terry very much,” added Peters.

“The key is to make sure we execute a contract that is fair to both parties, balancing what McLaurin has meant to the franchise while we focus on the future,” Peters concluded.
