Steelers Rekindle Interest in Jonnu Smith: New Chapter in the Offense?
The Pittsburgh Steelers have reopened discussions with Miami Dolphins tight end Jonnu Smith, who is seeking a renegotiation of his current contract. The news, confirmed by sources close to the situation, revives the possibility of a trade between the two teams, after previous reports had suggested otherwise. Smith, 29, expressed his interest to the Dolphins in modifying the two-year agreement he signed last season. This contract would guarantee him $4.8 million in 2025.Smith’s agent, Drew Rosenhaus, emphasized that his client’s priority is to remain in Miami. Smith had a record-breaking season in 2023, setting marks in receptions, yards, and touchdowns for a Dolphins tight end. In addition, he was the only player on the team to be selected for the Pro Bowl. Last season, Smith led the Dolphins in receptions and ranked among the best in receiving yards by a tight end in the entire league.Jonnu would definitely like to stay in Miami. That is his first option.

The Steelers’ interest in Smith is based on offensive coordinator Arthur Smith’s relationship with the player. Arthur Smith was tight ends coach and offensive coordinator for Jonnu Smith in Tennessee, and subsequently signed him during his time as Falcons coach.
The Steelers are looking to reinforce their receiving corps after trading George Pickens to the Dallas Cowboys during this offseason. However, the Steelers do not have a pressing need at the tight end position. Recently, they signed a four-year, $48 million contract extension with Pat Freiermuth, their second-round pick in 2021. They also have Darnell Washington, selected in the third round of 2023, and Connor Heyward.
In addition, Pittsburgh incorporated Donald Parham Jr., former tight end of the Chargers, who has scored 11 career touchdowns.
Last season, the Steelers kept four tight ends on their 53-man roster. The only departure was MyCole Pruitt, who was not re-signed after a one-year contract.
