Steelers Suffer Key Losses for Matchup Against the Seahawks

The Pittsburgh Steelers will face Sunday’s game against the Seattle Seahawks with significant absences in their defense, including cornerback Joey Porter Jr. Initially, coach Mike Tomlin had expressed optimism about Porter Jr.’s availability, who experienced hamstring discomfort against the Jets. However, Porter Jr. did not participate in training throughout the week. In the absence of Porter Jr., the Steelers will turn to Brandin Echols and James Pierre to cover the cornerback position.

Absolutely, I think so,” defensive coordinator Teryl Austin affirmed, referring to Brandin Echols’ ability to play as an outside cornerback in the absence of Porter Jr. “I know that when we brought him in during the offseason, we anticipated that he would play an important role. He’s still a very good player, and I don’t feel limited now that he has to take on a more advanced role.”

The Steelers could also depend on the versatility of Ramsey, who has primarily played in the slot. Ramsey covered all positions in the secondary against the Jets, when injuries affected the Steelers in the Week 1 victory. In addition to Porter Jr., the Steelers will be without safety DeShon Elliott (knee) and Derrick Harmon (knee). Although they will suffer these losses, the Steelers’ defense recovers a key element: the pass rusher Nick Herbig, who missed the first game of the season due to a hamstring injury. Herbig has been removed from the injury report for Sunday and is ready to debut in the season.
