Matthew Stafford Evaluates His Return to the Field with the Rams

Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford, who has not practiced during training camp due to a back injury, will conduct a workout on Saturday morning, according to head coach Sean McVay. Stafford did not participate in practice or a jog on Wednesday, nor in a joint practice on Thursday. McVay commented after the Rams’ joint practice with the Saints on Thursday that Stafford’s workout on Saturday will be similar to the previous week.

Let’s hope his back responds a little better.

When asked if Stafford’s back injury is related to function or pain management, McVay responded: “I think probably a little bit of both.”

But we’re also trying to understand this, so I don’t really have much more information than to think we’re trying some different things that will hopefully be in line with me getting back on the field.

Last Saturday, Stafford threw 68 passes in a training session at the Rams’ team facilities, with no limitations on the types of throws he could make. The next step, according to McVay that night, was to participate in individual drills during practice the following Monday. That day, McVay said that although Stafford “felt good”, “he didn’t feel good enough” to throw two days later. The Rams “didn’t think that [practicing] was the right thing based on how he felt when he woke up,” McVay said. When asked on Monday if surgery had been ruled out for Stafford, McVay responded: “That has not been a conversation we’ve had.”

I haven’t gone down that road yet in terms of those types of conversations. There have been a lot of conversations about what’s the best method of how we want to approach it. That hasn’t been something that has come up.
