Matthew Stafford Delays Return to Rams Training

Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford will not return to training next week as initially expected, coach Sean McVay announced on Saturday. Stafford is dealing with back discomfort. Last week, McVay had stated that Stafford, 37, would have limitations at the start of training camp, but that he was expected to be “absolutely” ready for the regular season. Even after Stafford returns to training, the Rams plan to keep the quarterback on a modified schedule, along with other veteran offensive players. On Saturday, McVay clarified that Stafford has not suffered any setbacks, but that it’s “most sensible to go week to week with him.”

I don’t think we can be smart enough with someone like Matthew [Stafford] and I think it’s best for him, best for our football team, and that’s the plan we’ll have moving forward.

McVay reiterated that the goal is for Stafford to be ready for the Rams’ first game of the season against the Houston Texans and that he has “no reason to worry” that Stafford will not practice on Monday. During the first week of training camp, Stafford has spent most of his time away from the field, working with the Rams’ training staff. On Saturday, he watched part of the training from the field. In 16 games last season, Stafford completed 65.8% of his passes for 3,762 yards and 20 touchdowns. He didn’t play in the last game of the regular season because the Rams had already secured the NFC West title.
