Shedeur Sanders Explains His Father’s Absence at Training Camp

The young Cleveland Browns quarterback, Shedeur Sanders, has revealed the reasons behind his request to his father, Deion Sanders, not to visit him at training camp. Sanders, who was selected in the NFL draft, seeks to focus on his professional development. Deion, a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, shared that his son asked him not to attend the training sessions due to the limited opportunities he has had in practice. Meanwhile, Deion visited his other son, Shilo, at the Tampa Bay Buccaneers training camp.

“I don’t want him to come see me now because I want to get to where I want to get, and then let him see me,” Shedeur declared. “I don’t want him to come and see me do a couple of reps, and he’s cheering like a good father. No, you can’t be proud of me right now. I have to get to where I’m going, and I know I have a lot to do to get there.”

The young quarterback explained that he prefers to avoid distractions and maintain focus on his work. He believes that the presence of his father, given the media attention he generates, could divert the team’s attention. Shedeur was considered one of the best quarterbacks in the 2025 NFL draft, before being selected in the fifth round by the Browns. During the first week of training camp, Shedeur is the only quarterback in the competition for the position who has not had opportunities with the starting offense. In addition, Shedeur addressed his father’s health, who recently underwent surgery to remove a tumor in his bladder. Deion has reported that there is no trace of cancer and that he will continue his work as an American football coach at the University of Colorado.

“You definitely have to stay mentally focused,” Shedeur commented. “Dad, he’s a person who will take care of his own, we take care of what we have to do. We really didn’t even have a formal conversation about it because it was like, ‘You guys need to focus on what you can do. You can’t sit here and feel sorry for me, and that’s affecting you.'”
