WESTFIELD, Ind. – Indianapolis Colts veteran running back Salvon Ahmed suffered a serious injury to his right leg during Sunday’s practice at training camp. The injury occurred after an illegal “hip-drop” tackle, and Ahmed was immediately taken to the hospital for examination. The incident occurred during a development period, where third-string players usually participate. At the time of Ahmed’s injury, the Colts were conducting “live” drills, which involved physical contact and tackling.Ahmed, after receiving the ball, managed to advance before being caught by the undrafted free agent Trey Washington. “Hip-drop” tackles were banned last season due to the high incidence of lower body injuries they cause.Immediately after the impact, Ahmed grabbed his right ankle, which was in an unnatural position. The trainers came to assist him, and safety Camryn Bynum gathered his teammates for a prayer. The paramedics placed the runner on a stretcher and took him off the field.

“We never want to see that happen,” coach Shane Steichen commented. “I know we don’t encourage ‘hip-drop’ tackles. I know Trey is down, and I don’t think he was trying to do that. We’re just trying to create an advantage… Those (backup players) will have to tackle in the preseason.”

The Colts have held few live sessions in training during Steichen’s first two camps in Indianapolis. However, this year promised a more intense camp with more tackling.

“I think training camp is where you want to create the edge, the toughness, and the identity of your football team, so you have live periods,” Steichen added.

After the injury, Steichen discussed with the team leaders how to proceed. There were about 15 minutes of practice left, including a crucial period of 2-minute situation simulations. They agreed that continuing would be best.

“There are guys here who need those reps to compete and improve,” said veteran linebacker Zaire Franklin, who has been friends with Ahmed for six years. “We’re trying to be the best team we can to win. We have to keep pushing.”

Steichen added: “There are many things going through my head in that situation. I spoke with some of the team leaders. We wanted to do that last 2-minute situation. We felt we needed it. They agreed.”Ahmed has played four seasons in the NFL, all with the Miami Dolphins, and joined the Colts as a free agent earlier this year.
