Micah Parsons: Will He Be Ready for the Cowboys’ Season Opener?

Amidst the uncertainty surrounding Micah Parsons’ contract extension, Dallas Cowboys coach Brian Schottenheimer expresses optimism about the star player’s participation in the season opener against the Philadelphia Eagles, scheduled for September 4th.

I think at the end of the day, we feel like Micah will be on the field when we face Philadelphia in 15 days or whatever.

Parsons, who has not participated in training camp practices, has been present at team meetings and light practice sessions. At the beginning of the camp, he mentioned back discomfort and received treatment in Oxnard. So far, conversations between the Cowboys and Parsons’ agent, David Mulugheta, about a new deal have not resumed. Owner and general manager Jerry Jones had expressed in March that an agreement had been reached on the general terms of a contract, but there has been no progress since then. Parsons has a $21.324 million contract for this season, under the fifth-year option of his rookie contract. After this week, the Cowboys only have a few practices scheduled before finalizing the 53-player roster and focusing entirely on the Eagles. Schottenheimer recognizes the importance of Parsons getting physically prepared, even though he hasn’t participated in on-field practices. Schottenheimer highlights that Parsons knows his body and has been present in meetings and light practices, which allows him to understand the plays and strategies of the team. Despite the lack of work on the field, Schottenheimer is confident that the training staff is taking the necessary measures to ensure that Parsons is in optimal condition. Parsons’ situation could influence the Cowboys’ strategy when making the final roster, which could lead to keeping an extra player at the pass rusher position.
