New Orleans Saints in Negotiations with Julian Blackmon

The New Orleans Saints are in talks to sign free agent safety Julian Blackmon, according to sources close to the situation. The move seeks to fill the vacancy left by the retired Tyrann Mathieu.

Although an agreement has not been finalized, negotiations are ongoing. Blackmon, a prominent figure in the free agent market, could significantly strengthen the Saints’ defense.

Blackmon, a former third-round pick, is considered one of the best safeties currently available. The player, after a disappointing offseason, returned to the Indianapolis Colts with a one-year contract for less than $4 million.

Their expectations were to improve their chances of obtaining a multi-year contract in 2025. However, a labrum injury suffered in the first game of the season affected their performance.

Despite the injury, Blackmon participated in 16 games, his highest number in a season. Although his performance did not meet his expectations, he managed to impact the Colts’ defense with three interceptions and 86 tackles, providing stability to a young and injury-affected Indianapolis secondary.

Blackmon has proven to be a versatile player throughout his career, playing both cornerback and safety in college. In his first three seasons, he primarily served as a free safety, but was then moved to strong safety, where he excelled in 2023. Team needs brought him back to free safety last season.

In five seasons, Blackmon has 10 interceptions and 300 tackles.
