METAIRIE, Louisiana – The New Orleans Saints have made the decision to release safety J.T. Gray, according to an announcement by head coach Kellen Moore this Monday. Gray, who joined the Saints in 2018 as an undrafted free agent, excelled on special teams and was team captain. During his career, he was twice selected as a first-team All-Pro and participated in the Pro Bowl in 2021, also as a special teams player.

That was one of the most difficult decisions so far this year. He was a challenging move, he’s a really good special teams player and a great player.

Moore explained that Gray’s release was based on the need for flexibility in the squad and was not related to the hamstring injury he suffered in early summer. Moore clarified that Gray has already recovered, but the injury limited his participation in training camp.

We know the high-quality player he is, the impact he has had on this organization. Simply with the… management of the squad during the season and in the coming weeks, there are many challenges associated with that. It was a really difficult decision to make.

Moore mentioned that the possibility of offering Gray a position on the practice squad has not yet been discussed, but he anticipated that he will likely receive offers to join another team’s active roster soon.
